Reports published on October 5, 2026 said Microsoft had reduced its projected internal spending on Anthropic technology by more than one-third, while Meta had fewer employees using Claude Code. The date is when the reports appeared; they did not give exact dates for either company’s internal changes.

Microsoft’s projected Anthropic spending fell by more than a third

Microsoft’s internal spending projection had been at least $1 billion earlier in 2026. It was later reportedly reduced by more than one-third; the amount of the revised projection was not stated.

Employees were also reportedly steered toward GitHub Copilot and OpenAI models. The reported change concerns Microsoft’s internal spending and tool use. Separately, customer spending on Anthropic models through Microsoft’s enterprise platforms was reported to be growing.

Meta had fewer reported Claude Code users

Meta’s Claude Code user count reportedly fell from about 60,000 earlier in 2026 to about 30,000 later. The accounts linked the decline in part to workforce reductions and the promotion of Meta’s own coding tools, without assigning a precise share to either factor.

Meta’s alternatives include Muse Code and MetaCode. Reported figures put their user counts at more than 6,000 for Muse Code and more than 30,000 for MetaCode. One 28-day period of Claude Code use at Meta was reported to cost more than $105 million.

The workforce cuts cited in connection with Meta’s decline were at Meta: spring layoffs were reported to affect about 10% of a workforce then totaling 78,000 people.

Anthropic models power specific Microsoft 365 Copilot agents

Microsoft’s documentation says Word, Excel, and PowerPoint Agents in Microsoft 365 Copilot use Anthropic models when enabled for an organization’s tenant. Administrators can disable that provider for these agents.
