On October 8, 2026, Microsoft began applying a 2 TB shared OneDrive pool to new and upgraded Microsoft 365 Family and Premium subscriptions. The change replaces the former 1 TB-per-member arrangement; existing subscribers generally move to the pool at their first renewal on or after May 2, 2027. An eligible plan change may trigger the switch earlier. Microsoft’s support page sets out the current storage rules.
How the 2 TB pool changes the old allowance
Under the previous arrangement, each member had 1 TB of OneDrive storage. A fully populated six-member subscription could therefore reach 6 TB. The new model gives the whole subscription 2 TB, shared among the primary subscriber and up to five additional members. For that six-member maximum, the change means 4 TB less capacity—about two-thirds. It does not mean every household previously had 6 TB.
The shared pool can be more flexible for uneven use: one member may use more than 1 TB when enough space remains for everyone else. But a household that used close to the former 6 TB maximum will have substantially less total storage under the new allowance.
| Storage model | Allocation | Total for six members |
| Previous arrangement | 1 TB per member | Up to 6 TB |
| Current arrangement | 2 TB shared across the subscription | 2 TB |
When existing subscribers move to shared storage
New and upgraded subscriptions began using the shared model on October 8, 2026. For existing Microsoft 365 Family and Premium subscribers, Microsoft says the change generally takes effect at the first renewal on or after May 2, 2027. An eligible plan change can bring it forward, and Microsoft says it will notify subscribers before the transition.
Shared storage does not expose private files
The allowance is pooled, but members’ OneDrive files remain private unless they explicitly share them. If a subscription exceeds its storage quota, Microsoft says files remain accessible for up to one year while the subscriber manages storage.
Microsoft says it notifies subscribers as they approach the limit. They can manage their storage from the Microsoft account dashboard, free up space, add storage, or upgrade. Add-ons can raise total storage to as much as 10 TB.
