Doom is famous for being one of the most influential FPS titles of all time, but would it have worked as a 2D platform game? Calavera Studio answers the question with MiniDOOM, a fun 2D platform and action game.

At NeoTeo we can't let anything with DOOM in its name go unnoticed. We are all old-school folks who grew up with id Software's game. We are not the only ones, because even today there's DOOM in everything: DOOM with rotten potatoes, DOOM running on pregnancy tests, in Minecraft, on a thermostat and on even stranger things. Mods of all kinds, including one of the weirdest and funniest DOOM mods, a Ghostbusters one, to improve the graphics and one that is, literally, Brutal. Well, to that whole list we must add MiniDOOM, the 2D DOOM from Calavera Studio.

MiniDOOM: Doom in 2D Platformers

MiniDOOM, a Fun Parody

Its own developers define it as a parody of the original game but much shorter, where the premise puts you in control of the iconic Doom Marine in his fight against all kinds of monsters to reach the end of the level.

MiniDOOM was created as part of a game programming course that Calavera Studio ran to show how to make a simple platformer in GameMaker Studio. In fact, the beautiful sprites that make up the enemies deserve a special mention, standing out the versions of Zombieman, the brown humanoid demon Imp, the flaming flying skulls known as Lost Soul, the Pink Demon, and the powerful Baron of Hell (a creature similar to a minotaur) and the legendary Cacodemon (a red monster with a large spherical body crowned with horns), which will make your life impossible while you try to reach the end of the level alive.

Throughout the adventure, explosive barrels will be present, which you can shoot to cause greater damage to nearby enemies. As in the original game, in MiniDOOM the character starts equipped with a pistol but later you can get better weapons like a shotgun, machine gun, rocket launcher, plasma rifle, and the powerful BFG 9000. MiniDOOM is available on Windows. You can download the file by clicking here.

MiniDOOM 2, the Sequel to the Beast

Want more? Well, there is more! Launched earlier this year, and given the success of the first part, MiniDOOM 2 expands the concept and adds more levels, more enemies, more weapons, and much more blood. 17 new levels, 2 new bosses, 14 weapons (including all the originals from the game and some secret ones), 40 minutes of good heavy metal, five difficulty levels, and four game modes.

MiniDOOM 2 has a patch that adds DOOM Eternal weapons and skins. If you need a manual, because the game doesn't explain much about anything, you can read the manual, as we used to do in those old times. You can download MiniDOOM 2 from itch.io.

Enjoy!
