Virtual friends, digital allies, confidants of ones and zeros… the idea is nothing new. But this is the era of artificial intelligence, and chatbots have reached a higher level of interaction. The people behind the Nomi.ai project want to put all that power in our hands to create a virtual girlfriend, a friend or companion with personalities and interests tailored to our liking.
In August 2020, while we were dealing with the pandemic, collective lockdown and uncertainty, we talked about the Replika project. Its goal was (and still is) to let users build an AI companion, a copy of themselves that serves as emotional support.
Replika hasn't gone anywhere, and even offers initial support for devices like Oculus headsets, but it has some restrictions in its training process.
Nomi.ai points in a different direction, offering users more flexibility to create different virtual companions. Do you want a colleague to talk about science fiction all day? A friend to help you plan events or trips? A virtual girlfriend to enjoy more intimate conversations? During its beta phase, all users will get access to 1,000 messages per day without restrictions.
How to create a virtual girlfriend on Nomi.ai
Nomi.ai allows access using alternative credentials like Google or Apple. The next step is to share some basic data about yourself, including name and date of birth. Then we move to the general parameters of our first creation: Friendship, Mentor, Romance, and Gender (M-F-NB). In the last phase, we choose the name, an AI-generated avatar, personality values, and specific interests. This is without a doubt the most important part in forming a 'Nomi', since they cannot be altered.
The rest is a matter of starting to talk, and when Nomi.ai says "without restrictions", let's say it's not lying. While it may make some technical mistakes, it only responds in English, and the delirium is just around the corner (example below), it's not difficult to develop intimate moments with the right configuration.
The platform allows us to have more than one active Nomi, and delete them forever at any time. This requires entering the full command (that is, "Delete 'nameofNomi'"), since it is irreversible.
In summary, Nomi.ai combines a polished platform with an intuitive interface, and the general absence of hard limits will attract attention in the short term... but let's not forget it's in beta. I imagine the service will require some financial commitment sooner or later, and that the number of similar offers will keep increasing, leading to a more competitive environment. Try it!
