The Facebook's union with Oculus shows how virtual reality can connect people around the world and allow them to inhabit the same digital world more closely, replicating being together in real life. The official Oculus YouTube account has added two new videos showing a demonstration of Facebook's virtual reality with Toybox. This system lets you use your hands to push things, toss objects separately, stack blocks, and play with another person inside a virtual world. In the second demonstration, which is an overlay of the split screen from the previous video, you can see what it means to have tactile control and interact with another person through Toybox. Both users are stacking blocks, playing ping pong, setting off fireworks, shooting objects at each other with a slingshot, and even shooting each other with guns, all in virtual reality. The company is currently polishing the experience to provide players with a safe environment when using the tactile controls in virtual reality.
Inside Toybox, players see each other as an avatar (head and hands visible) in blue over a virtual table, where a multitude of objects are stacked for interaction. Many people may already be associating Oculus's main purpose with video games, but Facebook will likely focus on the social implications of virtual reality. The good news is that Oculus Touch will be released separately from the Rift during the first quarter of 2016.
