It is quite common to talk about how one technology "kills" another, casting it forever into the realm of the "retro" and nostalgic. Argentine designer Lucila Kibudi shows a part of that process through her personal project "Once Appon a Time": from VHS to Netflix, from cassette to Spotify, from diskette to the cloud. Classics of technology and entertainment, symbolized by their most popular modern alternatives.
How long has it been since you used an audio cassette? Do you remember the analog TV shutdown? Is there a typewriter left in your house? While some technologies considered "old" have withstood the passage of time wonderfully (vinyl is a striking example), others were an integral part of our lives, and one day… they left, replaced by better tools or turned into services.
Many enthusiasts take those old options and turn them into something new, like the mobile phone and the volume control made with a rotary dial. And in certain cases they become a source of inspiration, as has happened to Lucila Kibudi, an Argentine designer who currently resides in Barcelona.
Lucila explains that "Once Appon a Time" was born in the midst of quarantine. Online floppy disk images and the memory of an old telephone of her grandmother sparked the idea. The final result is extraordinary, and the whole set exploded on Twitter as soon as the first images were shared.
