Steve Cook has spent his time over the last few years looking for indie games that have gone unnoticed. That's how he decided to launch One Thousand Voices, a project that features 1,000 independent and free games, hand-picked.

One Thousand Voices: 1,000 Hand-Picked Free Indie Games
One Thousand Voices

How it all began

On May 14, 2016, Steve "Moshboy" Cook used his Twitter account to publish a link to an Itch.io game, q_dork. From that moment, he decided to start the project he himself called the 1000 Game Makers Thread, which is nothing more than a collection of tweets containing GIFs and links to independent, personal, and interesting games from around the world that Cook wanted to share. The project concluded this past weekend, when Steve published his thousandth link, dedicated to the work of indie game developer Sylviefluff. Now called One Thousand Voices, the project features 1,000 independent and free games, hand-picked.

A spiritual successor

Moshboy's previous project was called Pirate Bay Bundle, a collection of small, weird, and overlooked free games from 2014. One Thousand Voices is a spiritual successor that uses GIFs to present small indie games, showing their charm and personality in 140 characters or less through Twitter. In an era where the video game industry focuses on big-budget productions with annual sequels or the growing wave of remasters, remakes, and adaptations, projects like One Thousand Voices are always well received, standing out in the scene.

The treasure hunt for trashgames

Cook has spent his time over the last few years searching for "trashgames" (junk games), a term used affectionately for those experimental, simple games, some used for projects and others unfinished, that have been lost in some remote place waiting to be found and played. Steve's idea behind One Thousand Voices is precisely to showcase all the incredible work being done in the video game space that doesn't receive the attention it deserves. In One Thousand Voices, you'll find games of every genre, from text adventures to elegant action platformers, to mention just a few of the variants you can play for free in your browser. Don't wait any longer, check out the complete list of games on Steve's account and start playing.
