The first time we talked about OnionShare was in July 2014. Its development arose from the need that many journalists around the world have to transfer files and protect their sources simultaneously, but that doesn't prevent regular users from downloading a copy to do the same. OnionShare works alongside the Tor Browser and is very easy to use.
Personally, I don't like sharing files online. It's not that I consider the method flawed or anything like that, but my local providers make it a real nightmare. Upload speeds synchronized with download speeds are effectively a myth (at least where I live), and if the file package adds up to several hundred megabytes, I have to wait a good while (I've suffered three-and-a-half-hour transfers).
In other regions this doesn't happen, and their upload speeds are much more decent, which opens up the possibility of sharing files securely, anonymously, and privately. The Tor network fulfills those three conditions, but it's not exactly friendly. Something is needed to make the process simpler, and that's where OnionShare comes in.
OnionShare's job is to create a kind of mini-server with the files we want to share and generate an .onion address to share with the recipient. OnionShare can connect to the Tor network using control ports or socket files, but the simplest way is to download a copy of the Tor Browser and let it run in the background.
When we click “Start server”, OnionShare will use the Tor Browser's connectivity so that the files are exposed to the network. The recipient enters the address in their copy of the Tor Browser and proceeds to download.
Access to the mini-server can be protected with a password, and there doesn't seem to be a limit on the number of folders or files to share. Unlike the Tor Browser, OnionShare is not a portable program, so it requires a formal installation. It's completely open source and compatible with Windows, Linux, or Mac.
