On September 30, 2026, Synopsys and OpenAI announced a multi-year agreement to develop GPT-Synopsys, a specialized model intended to operate Synopsys electronic design automation (EDA) tools in semiconductor-design workflows. Synopsys describes a planned process in which agents run tools, interpret the results, make design changes and repeat the cycle for engineers to review.

How the planned EDA workflow would work

The proposed agents would work toward chip-design objectives such as power, performance and area (PPA) optimization, timing and verification closure—the completion of required design checks. Engineers would review the resulting outcomes. The agreement covers development of this workflow; it does not describe GPT-Synopsys as a finished product.

Planned hosting and integrations

Synopsys says GPT-Synopsys is planned to run on OpenAI-hosted infrastructure and integrate with Synopsys.ai and Synopsys Autopilot. The company also says the model is intended to interoperate with customers’ agent-harness systems, which coordinate how AI agents use tools. OpenAI is expected to license Synopsys EDA tools for the model’s development.

Synopsys’ customer-data commitments

Synopsys says customer-specific design data will not be used to train the model. The company also says that data will be encrypted in transit and at rest, with configurable retention, audit and permission controls.

Synopsys says early technology engagements are underway with semiconductor customers.
