OpenAI plans to share the usage allowance for ChatGPT and Codex across its Plus, Pro, and Business plans starting in December 2026. The allowance will be measured in tokens, and Instant chat will not draw from it, according to OpenAI’s announcement. The change is planned, not yet in effect.
What the shared allowance covers
OpenAI says the change will bring Work’s agentic capabilities into the main ChatGPT experience. Tokens are units of information a model processes and generates. The announcement names Plus, Pro, and Business, and covers usage across ChatGPT and Codex.
Instant chat is excluded from this shared allowance. OpenAI says usage will depend on the model and task: advanced models and complex tasks generally use more.
How to track usage and resets
OpenAI says combined remaining usage and reset times will appear in Settings → Usage. If you reach the allowance, the options it lists are waiting for a reset, upgrading your plan, or buying credits for eligible features.
OpenAI expects most users will not need to wait for resets more often than they do now. That expectation accompanies the planned change; it does not alter the stated factors that affect usage, including model choice and task complexity.
Intelligent UI has no separate quota
OpenAI says Intelligent UI has no separate usage quota; existing model, tool, and plan allowances still apply.
