Apple announced on October 31, 2026, that Alibaba’s Qwen is planned to support selected Apple Intelligence experiences in China. Developer beta testing is scheduled to begin November 4, with a user rollout planned for December 2026 alongside iOS 27.3, according to Apple’s announcement.

Qwen has a role in selected tasks

Apple says its own generative models will power the core feature package, while Qwen is planned for selected uses in Siri, Writing Tools and Visual Intelligence. In Siri, users could make certain requests and ask questions about photos, PDFs and presentations. Writing Tools could use Qwen to generate original text. The announcement does not assign Qwen to every Apple Intelligence feature.

NeoTeo previously covered reporting about a China-specific Apple model in an earlier article. Apple’s new announcement identifies a specific role for Qwen in selected experiences.

Apple also says the initial package excludes the next-generation Siri AI features announced at WWDC 2026.

The planned rollout is for supported iPhones in China

Apple scheduled developer beta testing to start November 4 and plans to roll out the features to users in China in December with iOS 27.3. Apple lists iPhone 16 and later, iPhone Duo, iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and iPhone Air. Its Chinese footnote names English and Simplified Chinese for Siri and device language settings.

CGTN reports that eligibility includes buying a compatible iPhone in China, or setting both the device location and Apple Account country or region to China. Apple says support on other platforms will follow after necessary approvals.

Developer model support is separate from a Siri setting

Apple’s Foundation Models framework lets app developers add local or server-based large language model providers, as described in an Apple Developer session. That app-level framework is distinct from a consumer setting to connect a personal model directly to system Siri.

A separate Mac guide had surfaced earlier. MacRumors reported that a China support guide for connecting Qwen to Siri and Writing Tools on eligible Macs was spotted on August 8 and removed by August 9, 2026. Apple’s October announcement schedules the initial package for iPhone and says other-platform support depends on necessary approvals.

AirPods are required for one translation mode

For in-person Live Translation, Apple lists AirPods 5, AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation, AirPods Pro 2 and later, or AirPods Max 2. AirPods Max 2 also requires current firmware and pairing with an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone. These accessory conditions apply to that translation mode.

Signing in to Qwen

Apple says users can access Qwen through a Qwen account or Sign in with Apple. Separately, CGTN reported Alibaba’s statement that user requests and generated responses would not be used to train Qwen.
