Building retro consoles is a very simple process these days, but the rules change completely when we move to real hardware. Arcade machines can be very finicky, their CRT screens demand respect, and the passage of time introduces new challenges, such as the lack of official information. However, Dr. Tim Nicholls (better known as @woodpunk on Mastodon) reminds us that in his Google Drive there are more than 1,000 free manuals for repairing, configuring, and modifying different arcade machines.
Arcade machines are not creatures that can be easily “adopted”. Some units reach two meters in height and weigh more than 100 kilograms, so working with them requires ample space, appropriate tools, good lighting, all the patience in the world, and most importantly: documentation.

The community of experts and enthusiasts of arcade machines is truly gigantic, as is the volume of shared resources online. The digitization process never ends, and it's very likely that you can find everything you need to know about a specific model. Now the question is: Where do we begin? The answer lies in the personal archive of Dr. Tim Nicholls (@woodpunk on Mastodon), which holds more than 1,300 operating manuals, circuits, configurations, and modding guides for all kinds of arcade machines from the '70s, '80s, and '90s.
The manuals have been on Google Drive for years, but the user “snorkasaurus” made a partial copy of the archive in the Internet Archive. Just over a thousand PDF files can be viewed directly, while the rest (zip files with additional material) require a download. What can we find there? Classics and “relatively” modern alike: Asteroids, Centipede, Cloak and Dagger, Donkey Kong, Daytona USA, Galaga, Galaxian, Golden Axe, Indy 500, Killer Instinct, Mortal Kombat 2 and 3, OutRun, Pac-Man, Paperboy, Pit Fighter, Space Invaders, Star Wars, Street Fighter II, (take a breath)... too many, and you have them one click away.
