Rare created some of the best games for the Nintendo 64, including GoldenEye 007 and Banjo-Kazooie... but it would be a mistake not to mention Perfect Dark from 2000. The adventure of young Joanna was a kind of spiritual successor to GoldenEye, and ten years later it received a solid remake on Xbox 360. However, today we came across the PC-compatible port by 'fgsfdsfgs' on GitHub. This port includes mouse look, stable 60 FPS framerate, and widescreen support, making it a superior experience.

Perfect Dark for PC

Playing retro titles on original hardware is a true overdose of nostalgia, but even the most hardcore players recognize the value in the quality of life improvements that some ports offer. Doom, Prince of Persia, and Rollercoaster Tycoon are just three examples that come to mind, although we've also explored more technically demanding games like Dark Forces and Doom 64.

In fact, the fan community is making great efforts to bring Nintendo 64 classics to the PC. GoldenEye 007 received the most attention for obvious reasons, but today it's Perfect Dark's turn. The GitHub user 'fgsfdsfgs' shared one of his functional builds, and despite its limitations, it definitely deserves our time.

How to Play Perfect Dark on PC

Obviously, 'fgsfdsfgs' cannot extract any assets from the original game (Nintendo's nuclear bombardment would be devastating), so it's necessary to 'obtain' a copy of the cartridge ROM. The 'fgsfdsfgs' profile explains which version is recommended (ntsc-final/US V1.1/US Rev 1), and what we should do to run it. After downloading the zip file of the port, we dump its contents into a temporary folder. Inside it, we create a folder called 'data', and there we place the ROM with the exact name 'pd.ntsc-final.z64'.

The rest is a matter of double-clicking the pd.exe executable and starting to enjoy, but I recommend returning to the GitHub profile, because that's where its wiki is. This section offers advanced information about the configuration of the pd.ini file, which helps us define keyboard bindings, resolution, VSync, and audio buffer, among other things. Download below!
