How many times have you played the classic game of Nintendo's most famous plumber? Many times, for sure, but never like this new adaptation. Get ready to rescue the princess once more, but now playing Super Mario Bros. in virtual reality with 3DNES.
The classic plumber title continues to make headlines; we have already seen world records like the player who finished the game in 4 minutes 57 seconds and 627 milliseconds and another one who finished it playing blindfolded. But now a new adaptation allows you to play Super Mario Bros. in virtual reality with 3DNES. Launched more than a year ago, this emulator that turned many classic 2D games from the beloved Nintendo console into 3D, created by Vietnamese developer Tran Vu Truc, can detect 2D images within NES games and convert them into 3D objects.
A New Way to Play the Classic
Thanks to the latest version of 3DNES, version 1.4, you can now use an HTC Vive headset to be Mario, jump on Goombas, travel through pipes, and grow bigger after eating mushrooms. Through this new perspective, the pipes that Mario descends, for instance, become circular objects, and you can see the fronts and backs of a Goomba. This first-person view gives us a new representation of the classic World 1-1, although according to the user who tried it, the game is not fully optimized, since turning left and right can cause severe motion sickness.
Add to that the fact that the new view can be a bit uncomfortable when jumping between platforms. Even so, playing Super Mario Bros. in virtual reality with 3DNES is an interesting experience that may appeal to fans of the plumber. Virtual reality support for 3DNES Pro is limited to the Pro version, which costs $4.99, and offers support for HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, TriniusVR, and Steam VR mobile devices, although HTC Vive and Oculus Rift are only compatible with the Windows versions of the emulator.
