3D Pinball Space Cadet is a classic through and through. We've previously explored its origins as a demo for what would become Full Tilt! Pinball by Cinematronics, but the community has done some very interesting things with the game, including the reverse engineering that brought it to different platforms. One of them is the Nintendo Wii, abandoned by the Japanese giant but kept afloat by its users, even in 2022. Would you like to play 3D Pinball Space Cadet on a Wii? This video will help you do it.
We won't deny it: Every now and then, we all want to return to 3D Pinball Space Cadet for a couple of games. Obviously, there are options today that offer far superior pinball tables, but the dynamics of this classic game combined with its nostalgic factor have allowed it to withstand the test of time.
As if that weren't enough, the community responded by sharing some projects that definitely deserve our attention, among them the reverse engineering of 3D Pinball Space Cadet by user k4zmu2a on GitHub. This gave rise to launchers and special versions for different platforms, including Android, the PS Vita, and the very Nintendo Wii. Do you have a Wii gathering dust? How to play 3D Pinball Space Cadet on the Nintendo Wii (and modern PCs too)
Michael MJD's YouTube channel, which we remember for his exploration of the famous SoftRAM program that scammed hundreds of thousands of users, has a whole playlist dedicated to the Nintendo Wii and the processes that connect it to the Web today. The news is that in the Games section of the Homebrew Browser there is an entry to install 3D Pinball Space Cadet.
Apparently, this launcher was first shared in October 2021 by author PacoChan, and its description clearly explains that it needs the original game files, a logical decision to avoid copyright conflicts (other launchers like Chocolate Doom and OpenRCT2 adopt the same strategy).
Installing the launcher on the Wii takes a few seconds, then we must move the SD card to a computer to copy the files inside (the exact path is apps / SpaceCadetPinball / Data). The video suggests using the edition present in Windows XP, and we join that suggestion. The last step is optional: if you want the original music, you'll need to make a prior recording in Ogg Vorbis format, since the launcher on the Wii cannot play MIDI, and .mid files don't convert from a technical point of view.
As a closing note, I'd like to mention that k4zmu2a's reverse engineering project also includes executables for modern versions of Windows in 32 and 64 bits. In other words, goodbye to strange compilations on the Internet: copy the files inside the folder, double click on SpaceCadetPinball.exe, and enjoy!
