Fishing is one of those outdoor activities that divides people. Some find it relaxing and challenging, while others get bored and frustrated. Technology has often tried to improve recreational fishing, and now it's the turn of drones. The PowerRay can dive to a depth of thirty meters, detect fish with a sonar, and even capture video using a 4K camera.

PowerRay: An Underwater Drone with Camera for Fishermen
PowerRay

The last time I went fishing was... well, I don't remember. I'm not far from a river, and one of my neighbors makes fishing gear, but it's not something that interests me. Of course, that's just my situation. On the other side, there are people who don't miss a weekend without a rod. What drives a person to fish? I imagine the top of the list is the challenge. Finding a good spot, waiting patiently, and then having that one-on-one battle with an animal much stronger than it appears. However, there are also those who prefer to cheat and increase their fishing effectiveness.

A drone built for fishing

That brings us to the new PowerRay drone, developed by PowerVision. The drone can reach a maximum depth of thirty meters and use its Fishfinder module to detect fish up to forty meters below that limit. In fact, the Fishfinder can be detached from the drone without issue, so nothing prevents using it as an independent unit. It also has an integrated 4K camera that sends live video to the surface, along with secondary telemetry displayed in a dedicated app compatible with iOS and Android.

Angler-friendly extras

Add to that a blue light that acts as "bait" to attract fish, a front support where you place a hook, virtual reality compatibility, and batteries that give the drone about four hours of autonomy.

Cable-bound, but ready for pre-order

Needless to say, all the mobility aspects of the PowerRay are limited by the umbilical cable that connects the drone to the surface (after all, WiFi doesn't work underwater). The company took advantage of CES 2017 to present its PowerRay, and although we don't have details on the price, what we do know is that pre-sales will begin on February 27.
