We've seen every kind of wearable device, including smart bracelets and watches, but we've also come across concepts based on clothing. The idea of intertwining clothes and electronics is not new, but Google's latest Project Jacquard aims to take that fusion much further by using conductive threads to create tactile, interactive fabrics that can be produced with traditional machinery.

Imagine your smartphone rings at the worst possible moment. Instead of digging it out of your pocket, you simply gesture over your shirt sleeve. Want to adjust the music volume? A gesture on the other sleeve does the trick. The caller is too persistent and you decide to answer? A slight touch on your chest, Star Trek style, routes the call to your Bluetooth headset... Science fiction? Perhaps for now, but those examples are definitely on the roadmap of many manufacturers. What still doesn't fully convince users about wearable devices is that they need to disappear completely, blending into our clothing in a much more advanced way. That vision demands a new alliance between technology and fashion.

That's where Project Jacquard comes in, a new experiment from Google's ATAP division, the same one responsible for the Ara modular phone. Its goal is to add touch support and gesture recognition to fabric, using components compatible with industrial looms. The magic lies in conductive threads that combine metal alloys with materials like cotton, polyester, or silk. These threads are flexible and sturdy enough to be woven on a conventional loom, giving designers the best of both worlds. Miniaturizing the rest of the electronics is a fundamental step, but the video shows some clever shortcuts, like hiding circuits in buttons and other trims.

The best part about Project Jacquard is that the materials can be mass-produced, which should keep the cost relatively low. In essence, software developers and fashion designers will have the chance to join forces to create the next generation of wearables in the form of shirts, jackets, and casual tees. The demos on the I/O conference floor were focused on touchpads capable of detecting different pressure levels and controlling smart lights. Is Google looking to step into the world of haute couture with Jacquard at its side?
