During the day, a user opens many web pages from their browser, and sometimes that repetitive action can become cumbersome, especially when we always visit the same sites. For this reason, we present Quickey, a free extension for Google Chrome that lets you launch web pages via keyboard shortcuts. The add-on inserts a virtual keyboard design into the browser, and from it, you can add URL addresses to each key. By pressing the assigned key from the physical keyboard, or a combination, the page will open without delay.
We already have the help of bookmarks or internet history to open sites almost automatically, but this method is much faster. Also, it is quite simple: you can modify URL addresses, move the URL to another key with drag-and-drop, and other tasks.
How to Use Quickey
When you install the extension in your Chrome browser, you will see the platform's icon in the top right corner. Clicking on its icon will open a tutorial in a new tab (we recommend skipping it). Then you will see the virtual keyboard in the tab: clicking any key lets you assign the URL address you want to it.
You will notice that some keys already come with a default address (Y, A, S, F). To reassign a new address, just place the mouse cursor over the key and the recycle bin icon will be enabled. If you click on the icon, the page will be removed, and then, from the "+" icon, you can insert a new web page. Sites will launch from the virtual keyboard or with the shortcut (Alt + key). For example, to open Neoteo, we use the shortcut "Alt + N" (with the keyboard active).
Extra Tools
The platform has some extra tools. For example, if you need to change the symbols on the keys, simply click on the symbol and a new dialog box will open where you can select a new symbol or emoji. In the bottom left corner, you will find the environment settings. There you can modify the web page launching options and the background of the virtual keyboard tab, among other options.
Quickey is a very good extension for Google Chrome for launching web pages from the virtual keyboard or via a physical keyboard combination. This is great for users who open a large number of sites during the day, and although with the add-on we are limited to the alphabet, we will have several options to open our usual sites.
