How happy are you? Complex question indeed. Besides having a completely subjective answer, the truth is that it can change at any moment. However, there are projects that seek to measure happiness as a global parameter, just like gross domestic product or life expectancy. The World Happiness Report is one such project, and it recently published its seventh edition. Where do you think your country stands?
Think for a moment about what makes you happy. Visualizing individual aspects shouldn't be too complicated, but they still don't guarantee happiness as a whole. Stories of unhappy people with ample access to advanced resources are endless, but denying the influence of the economy would be a very crude error. Still, economic well-being is not enough. The World Happiness Report produced by the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network is based on six parameters: GDP per capita, social support, life expectancy, freedom to make decisions, generosity, and perception of corruption, all contrasted against a hypothetical country (Dystopia) where no one is happy.
The happiest countries
The update for this year reveals that for the second consecutive time, Finland appears at the top of the list, closely followed by Denmark, Norway, Iceland, the Netherlands, Switzerland, and Sweden. When analyzing the case of Spain we see that it didn't gain many points relative to the 2018 edition, but that was enough to move up six steps and close the Top 30. On the Latin American side, Costa Rica is in position 12 (+1). It is followed by Mexico (23, +1), Chile (26, -1), Guatemala (27, +3), Panama (31, -4), Brazil (32, -4), Uruguay (33, -2), El Salvador (35, +5), Colombia (43, -6), Nicaragua (45, -4), and Argentina (47), which registers a significant drop of 18 positions. The happiest country in the entire American continent is Canada (position 9), while Haiti (147, +1) and Venezuela (108, -6) are the least happy countries in the region.

Both South Korea and Japan are two countries with very important socioeconomic development, but the happiness report places them on par with Jamaica and Kazakhstan. China appears in position 93, however, Taiwan is in position 25. If we take into account the volatility experienced in some regions, the World Happiness Report will probably never be a perfect tool, but it doesn't need to be either. It's another way to learn about our countries, and about ourselves.
