The Raspberry Pi Compute Module was introduced by the Raspberry Foundation as a solution for companies and enthusiasts who want to integrate the basis of the Raspberry Pi computer into advanced projects and final products. This module jumped from version 1 to version 3, and includes a Lite variant that lacks Flash, but the masterminds decided to raise the stakes and launch the Raspberry Pi Compute Module 3+, which adopts the SoC from the Raspberry Pi 3 B+, improves thermal specifications, and expands storage options.

If you're thinking about developing a small DIY project over the weekend, you'll most likely have enough firepower in a regular Raspberry Pi. It doesn't matter if it's the Zero model or one of its bigger siblings; with the right accessories and a good operating system, the mini computer won't let you down. However, there are times when the user needs a higher level of integration without sacrificing too much performance. That's when the Raspberry Pi Compute Module tends to shine. Enthusiasts and hardware manufacturers alike have made the most of the Compute Module's virtues, starting with its format inspired by SODIMM DDR2. That said, user demands grew, and the Raspberry Foundation decided to respond with the Raspberry Pi Compute Module 3+.

At first glance there don't seem to be radical changes, but we must highlight the SoC replacement. Now, the Raspberry Pi Compute Module 3+ uses the same chip found in the Raspberry Pi 3 B+, the Broadcom BCM2837B0, with the difference of a slight underclock to 1.2 GHz (due to power delivery limits). The RAM remains at 1 GB of LPDDR2, but the big change is storage flexibility. One of the main complaints from users is the lack of space on the Flash module. The Compute Module 3 is available with 4 GB or a microSD slot in its Lite variant, which they consider insufficient. The new Compute Module 3+ corrects this with 8, 16, and 32 GB versions, in addition to keeping the Lite module without Flash present.

That translates to a wide range of prices: The Raspberry Pi Compute Module 3+ Lite costs $25, and goes up $5 per step, reaching an interesting $40 on the 32 GB edition. I imagine several manufacturers have already contacted the Foundation to acquire the new module, but if you want one, remember that you'll need a compatible IO Board.
