In September of last year, we shared a video that teaches us how to remove cataracts from old CRT televisions, caused by deterioration in the adhesive that keeps the safety glass in place. Unfortunately, LCD panels suffer a similar affliction in the form of the "vinegar syndrome", associated with irreversible deterioration of the polarizing sheets. Enthusiast Ron Hinton received an old Acer K3865 laptop under the effects of the "vinegar syndrome", and made a decision not for the faint of heart: eliminate it at the root.
The "vinegar syndrome" is a problem that every retrohardware collector will have to face sooner or later. Time has forced us to replace capacitors, repair CRT monitors, build entire PCBs, and even emulate specific components, but LCD screens take the challenge to another level. There are many modern panels that can be adapted, but we must not forget their nature: they are essentially rectangles of glass, plastic, and adhesive that lose integrity over the years.
This brings us to Ron Hinton's personal blog, who received an Acer K3865 (or "K386S") from the Atlanta Historic Computing Society. Also known as the Acer Acros 325SE, this machine sports a 386 processor and 2 MB of RAM. When he powered it up with an external power source, he found its screen invaded by the "vinegar syndrome". Any other user would have stopped at that point. Instead, Ron took it as a challenge: it was time to change the polarizer.
Extreme LCD surgery to combat the "vinegar syndrome"
With a great deal of patience, Ron reached the panel and removed it from the machine, but not without first seeking help to acquire polarizing sheets of the right size. Fortunately, the panel manufacturer had chosen not to saturate the frame with adhesive, so he managed to access the glass without too much trouble. This "good luck" continued when he removed the top polarizer starting from one corner... but everything changed with the other polarizer.
First, he had to unsolder the flex cables from the rear boards that control the vertical element of the panel, and second, he had to remove the glass with extreme care and place it on a flat surface. Then the intervention of a blade was necessary, and finally, he used a scraper to remove the old adhesive.
The most important part? The screen survived the whole process and works perfectly. However, these LCDs were created with phase correction sheets and a different polarization formula, so "modern" options will never fully restore the factory contrast. Small compromises we must accept when fighting with obsolete hardware.
