Who wants to carry two terabytes in their pocket? It's no joke: solid-state technology has advanced enough that this is no longer a crazy idea. In fact, Samsung took advantage of the most recent CES and introduced its T3 line of portable SSDs, whose top model stores up to two terabytes, weighing just 51 grams. The SSD was expected to debut in March, but anyone interested can already purchase it online.
It's been a long time since solid-state drives were limited to users with very generous budgets. For a reasonable amount of euros, anyone can boost their computer's performance by replacing the traditional mechanical hard drive with an SSD, assuming they have the means to compensate for the differences in space. However, the idea that SSDs lack capacity has been completely shattered thanks to a new generation of products that place them on the same level as their magnetic siblings. A striking example is the Samsung T3 portable, which in its largest variant reaches the two-terabyte mark.
As we mentioned last January, the Samsung T3 uses a USB 3.1 Type-C interface, a decision that enables transfers of 450 megabytes per second. The T3 designation isn't exclusive to the two-terabyte model; those who need to save some cash can opt for versions with 250 gigabytes, 500 gigabytes, and one terabyte. The drives also feature hardware-based AES 256-bit encryption and are compatible with a special Samsung app for Android that allows password changes and checking remaining space. Naturally, Samsung made sure the new T3 supports a wide range of mobile devices from the South Korean giant, including the Edge S6 and S7 families.
The Samsung T3 is now available through Amazon Spain, and the final price with free shipping for the two-terabyte model is 767 euros. If that number seems too steep, the 1 TB version drops to 390 euros, and the scale continues with 197 euros for 500 GB, or 133 euros for 250 GB.
