SanDisk took the opportunity to present its prototype, and although it hasn't confirmed a retail release yet, it's something worth following closely if the price is right.
New graphics cards, 7-nanometer developments, laptops, mobile phones, smart kitchens, many robots... CES 2019 had no trouble achieving that classic combination of interesting and predictable. The hottest point for hardware enthusiasts was undoubtedly the introduction of Nvidia's GeForce RTX 2060 (not to mention the constant trash talk from its CEO Jensen Huang) and AMD's announcement of the Radeon VII, but not everything is about the desktop PC. How big? Four terabytes, to be precise. The manufacturer wasn't as open as we'd like when sharing specifications, but press photos and images from sites like The Verge reveal the presence of a USB Type-C connector. That means SanDisk's prototype sits more in the realm of a micro SSD than a traditional USB stick, due to its natural speed requirements. No one in their right mind would try to fill a four-terabyte drive with the classic speeds found in generic USB sticks or low-cost SD cards. Only the USB 3.1 standard (and later) has enough speed to deliver an acceptable experience.
How much? Clearly well into four figures, considering that a 'normal' two-terabyte USB stick tops $1,200. When? We don't know. In fact, SanDisk hasn't even confirmed a launch. Who could need this? One possibility arises among video editors who record entire gigabytes in a short time with their 4K cameras. If demand exists, SanDisk likely has more news soon.
