Image search, also known as "reverse image search", is one of the most important tools on the Web, but not necessarily the most convenient to use. The Search by Image extension, compatible with Firefox and Chrome/Chromium, solves that problem by placing special commands in the context menu, with direct access to the main engines.
A couple of years ago we talked about image search and the best free engines available. Since then, others have joined the action, but the process is not so "direct" for the user. In more extreme cases, it is necessary to download the image we want to search (due to some wrapper or similar function) and reload it manually because drag and drop doesn't work. Fortunately, the Search by Image extension, compatible with Firefox and Chrome/Chromium, eliminates all that at the root.
How to Perform Image Searches with Search by Image
There is no mystery here: Once the extension is installed, it is enough to right-click on the image, open the Search by Image submenu, and select one of the available engines. The initial list amounts to eight: Google, Bing, Yandex, Baidou, Sogou, TinEye, Shutterstock and Alamy. The menu also includes options to open the image, share it, or request a search in all engines at once, but we have noticed that it doesn't always work. The most effective is to load one engine at a time.
The Search by Image icon has additional functions: Select Image and Select URL (first we choose the function, and then we click on the engine), Capture, Browse enables searching for locally saved images, and URL, which allows manual loading of addresses. Finally, the advanced configuration menu in Search by Image includes shortcuts to additional engines (some of them NSFW, beware), and the option to load tabs in the background.
