At NeoTeo we're huge Sonic fans, that's no secret. If you check the archive, you'll see we have a lot of material about Sega's hedgehog. We've covered fan-game exhibitions, the release of Sonic Time Twisted, and the best mods of the original games, among many other things. So when we found out that an unreleased (and official) game from the franchise had been released, we couldn't help but share it. The game is called "SegaSonic Bros" and it's completely different from all previous ones: it's a puzzle game in the style of Columns or Puyo Puyo.
SegaSonic Bros was a game developed by Sega for arcades, using the Sega System C2, a circuit board compatible with JAMMA boards. It was supposed to come out in 1992, but that never happened: when tested in Japanese arcades, very few people found it interesting. Perhaps because of the fiasco, the game was not only never released, but also kept secret for more than 20 years. It was only in 2016, when a functioning JAMMA board was found, that SegaSonic Bros was exposed to the public. Today, thanks to Dustin O’Dell, anyone can download and enjoy it for free.
Despite being developed for arcades, Dustin took the trouble to adapt the game to the Sega Genesis, Sega's 16-bit console. The resulting ROM can be played both with an emulator and from a cartridge on the original console. Thanks to Dustin, SegaSonic Bros became the last OFFICIAL Sonic game for Sega Genesis, 21 years after the console was discontinued (Sonic 3D Director's Cut doesn't count because it only fixes the problems of the original game).
The gameplay is similar to games like Puyo Puyo and Columns, where you have to form loops or lines of the same color to eliminate gems and make room for the following ones. As in all these cases, the pieces that fall from the sky have random colors and getting combos is rewarded with higher scores. Every ten levels a "Chaos Emerald" falls and eliminates everything on the board, to start over. At level 30 a new color (white) is introduced and the game continues until one of the players reaches level 99 or 9,999,990 points, whichever comes first. In short, it's not the type of game Sonic has accustomed us to, but it's still very fun.
