A recurring complaint among users is that current screens don't respond the same way as old CRT monitors when playing classic games. The lack of interlacing, automatic interpolation on some models, widescreen formats, and extreme resolutions affect the warmth we remember from those sessions. A small app called ShaderGlass aims to replicate those retro effects with more than 300 available shaders—including CRT simulation, smoothing, upscaling, and even VHS noise.

However, nostalgia is very powerful, and sometimes we need a more faithful reproduction. Assembling and maintaining a retro computer is an activity that I never tire of recommending, but some details can be inconvenient, like finding a CRT monitor in good condition and preparing the space to set it up at home. In general terms, nothing beats a CRT monitor in contrast and low resolutions, but if you're interested in the idea of simulating its characteristics, you should take a closer look at ShaderGlass.
ShaderGlass: Simulating CRTs and VHS Effects on Your Games
ShaderGlass applies special shaders to any screen or window of the desktop in real time. There are more than 300 options available, all coming from RetroArch and concentrated in a standalone app. The CRT effect is just one on the list: ShaderGlass can also perform upscaling, blurring, and sharpening, remove noise, inject motion blur, simulate standards like NTSC and PAL, force stereoscopic modes, imitate VHS recordings with washed-out colors or tracking problems, and much more.
Personally, I recommend visiting the Shader menu, scrolling down to the presets section, and exploring everything there. But one of the most interesting aspects is that we can customize them. If you think an effect is too subtle or exaggerated, you can experiment with dozens of sliders. Adjusting the pixel size (in the Input menu) is also a great idea, especially if you use 1440p or 4K monitors.
Needless to say, ShaderGlass will work better if the chip or graphics card in your computer has some firepower, but the "heavy" effects are relatively few, and the sliders in the Shader menu are very useful for keeping them under control. ShaderGlass is free, open source, and compatible with Windows 10 or Windows 11 in 64-bit.
