We've all been there: you need to hold your smartphone or tablet while doing something else, and you wish you had a third hand. That desire brings us to SkyFloat, a magnetic pole that serves as a stand for smartphones, tablets, phablets, hybrids, and other lightweight devices. The pole is easy to move around and extends to almost two meters.
I'll be honest: if I were to install a pole whose only purpose is to hold mobile devices in my home, I'd probably get that pole broken over my head. After all, I don't have much space, and nobody here is interested in practicing pole dancing. Still, I have to admit that the lack of a proper stand has prevented me from taking stable photos. My smartphone's lens is nothing special, and auto-stabilization can only do so much. I suppose I could improvise some DIY solution (the DIY world has plenty to offer when it comes to stands), but for those who prefer a finished product, SkyFloat might be worth a closer look.
Design and Features
The general configuration of SkyFloat consists of an aluminum pole, a metal end equipped with a neodymium magnet, and two metal plates that can be installed temporarily with adhesive or permanently with two screws. The end that holds the mobile device has a hinge, allowing you to adjust the angle and make reading text or interacting with the touchscreen easier.
A Note on Specifications
The maximum length of SkyFloat is 1.8 meters. Although I tried to find advanced specifications, I had no luck. Obviously, what matters most is the maximum weight, since the magnet must not only support the weight of the mobile device but also that of the pole. Even though it's made of aluminum, I'd like to know.
Crowdfunding Success
The SkyFloat campaign has exploded on Kickstarter, already surpassing six times its original goal of ten thousand dollars. Currently, anyone wanting one of these poles with two metal plates will have to pay $69 (shipping not included). Many comments on the project ask for the possibility of purchasing additional plates, so they can place one in each room. The first deliveries are expected in January.
