The Origins of Slender Man
The popularity of Slender Man (also known as Slenderman) is well known by the internet community. For those who are not aware, this fictional character emerged as a creepypasta (short horror stories shared over the Internet) created by the user «Victor Surge» (whose real name is Eric Knudsen), who published the first material about Slender Man on the forums of the site Something Awful. This was all part of a competition to alter images using Photoshop and give them a paranormal touch, from which emerged a thin, unnaturally tall man, with a head and face without features, and dressed in a black suit. Stories about Slender Man typically present him stalking, kidnapping, or traumatizing people, especially children.
From Creepypasta to the Big Screen
The fiction related to Slender Man spans many media, including literature, art, and its own video games, such as Slender: The Eight Pages and Slender: The Arrival. The impact it has had on popular culture led it to be part of Always Watching: A Marble Hornets Story (2015), a horror movie under the famous 'found footage' format, and Beware the Slenderman Slender Man (2016), a documentary that analyzes the incident in which two girls attempted to murder a friend in an attempt to appease the monster. And this year comes the third movie titled simply as Slender Man, which is directly based on the most terrifying creepypasta on the web.
The story takes place in a small town in Massachusetts, where four high school girls perform a ritual in an attempt to disprove the claims about Slender Man. But when one of the girls mysteriously disappears, they begin to suspect that she is, in fact, the last victim of the monster.
The movie stars Javier Botet as the monster Slender Man, along with Joey King, Julia Goldani Telles, Jaz Sinclair, and Annalise Basso. Produced by Mythology Entertainment, Sylvain White (Stomp the Yard) directed the movie with a script by David Birke. Slender Man will be released in theaters on May 18, 2018.
