The Man Behind the Mystery

Available information indicates that Romke Jan Bernhard Sloot was born on August 27, 1945, in Groningen, Netherlands. After going through a technical school and working for a radio station, Sloot completed his mandatory military service, settled in Utrecht with his family, and worked at Philips for a year and a half.

He returned to Groningen in 1978 to join an audio and video store, and later moved to Nieuwegein (a municipality of Utrecht) with the aim of starting his own business repairing TVs, stereos, and other electronic equipment.

In the mid-1980s, Sloot's attention turned toward home computers, and he developed the idea of a national repair service network called RepaBase (or RepoBase, according to other sources), with a database containing manuals and technical details.

As we all know well, storing information was neither fast nor cheap, and that may have been the spark that led him to create the Sloot Digital Coding System.

One of the most debated points about the Sloot Digital Coding System (SDCS) is whether it actually used compression. After all, storing an entire movie in just 8 kilobytes shatters Shannon's coding theorem.

Roel Pieper, former CTO and director of Philips, explained that the system did not use compression, but worked similarly to Adobe PostScript: Both sender and receiver know what kind of data can be transferred without sending that data. In other words, shared information.

A good example of this is found in the PDF format when using fonts. If both parties already have a copy of that font, all they need to transmit is the code that activates it, not the entire font, saving space and bandwidth.

From a certain point of view, that means the hypothetical movie is already stored on both parties' machines (or should be), but that contradicts one of the descriptions of the SDCS, storing only the basic elements of any movie, such as colors and sounds.

Beyond these differences, the Sloot Digital Coding System disappeared with its creator, who died of a heart attack on July 11, 1999, one day before signing an agreement with Pieper, who had left Philips two months earlier to join Sloot in creating a company called The Fifth Force.

All commercial plans would have continued even with Sloot dead, but a crucial piece for making the system work, a compiler stored on a floppy disk, vanished into thin air, and Sloot's laboratory (basically his attic) was completely cleaned the day after his death…
