Slovakia’s transport minister Jozef Raz said the country expected to authorize Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) driver-assistance system within days. The plan was reported on October 8, 2026; Raz said the transport ministry intended to send a recognition letter to the Netherlands’ vehicle regulator, the RDW.
The planned recognition letter to the Netherlands
Raz said FSD would be available in Slovakia once the recognition letter was delivered. The Netherlands’ RDW had approved the system earlier in 2026 and was described as Tesla’s lead authority in the European approval process.
Drivers remain responsible
FSD is a driver-assistance system, and Raz said drivers would remain responsible for the car. The planned authorization therefore does not shift responsibility away from the person behind the wheel.
A possible EU-wide vote
An EU-wide vote on FSD could take place as soon as December. If Slovakia authorizes the system, it would be the ninth EU country to do so. Czechia, Slovenia and Denmark were also reported to have approved FSD during 2026.
The European Transport Safety Council called for delaying the vote until public discussion of speed-related rules—including hands-off driving and system-initiated maneuvers outside highways—had taken place.
