Visual artists and image banks have already filed lawsuits, screenwriters fear for their jobs, and if radio stations can do without their announcers, what's next for artificial intelligence? Many have pointed to music as the next target. We've previously explored systems like Riffusion, MusicLM, and the Japanese platform Soundraw, but today it's SongR's turn, which lets us create songs with voice and lyrics, by pure algorithm.
They say there's no accounting for taste... but I'm not so sure about that. In our list of ten bad movies with fabulous songs, I think we reached a good consensus on the quality of those tracks. So, I'll take the liberty of raising two questions: Can we accept a song made by artificial intelligence if it's 'good'? Is it possible to call it 'music' if its origin is an algorithm?
The best way to find out is to try to create songs with AI and see (or hear) what happens. Riffusion and MusicLM didn't impress us much, and Soundraw uses a large bank of samples when delivering results. However, SongR enables the generation of songs with lyrics and voice, placing it in a different category.
How to create songs with voice and lyrics in SongR AI
This initial demo supports a total of four styles: Pop, Hip hop, Cafe and Piano Rock. Once we select the genre, we can enter a prompt to give the AI something to work with, although there's also the I Have my own lyrics option. If we follow that route, SongR enables an editor with a maximum of 750 characters, and two available voices, Emily and Kevin. The rest is a matter of clicking Render and waiting about 45 seconds.
If we like the song, we can download both the audio and the video, but is it worth it? Well... not really, at least in this version. The result of our tests was a kind of very irritating and off-key karaoke. SongR is limiting song generation to five per day, unless we use a VPN or change our IP by resetting the modem. That makes the platform very inflexible when a lot of experimentation is needed, however... time is on its side. Do you want to try it? Link below!
