The internet moves at breakneck speed, and we often forget about releases and memes. Remember the blue hedgehog with that odd look? We're talking about Sonic, the legendary SEGA figure that brought us so much joy in the 90s. After the overwhelming rejection of the first trailer, director Jeff Fowler announced the postponement of the release to redesign the main character.
The big-screen adaptation of one of the most iconic video games in history comes from Paramount, and it prepares us to forget the CGI Sonic that was the butt of jokes and memes. Seven months of intense work went into changing the character's design, which forced the film to be delayed by just over 90 days. Let's be generous: we like this Sonic. He's been caricatured rather than made so realistic and weird, with changes to his eyes, body, and expressions.
At the start of the trailer, we see the hedgehog running and spinning at full speed in Green Hill, the most iconic setting from the SEGA classic, giving it the nostalgic touch that the failed first preview lacked. The story shows us a Sonic who must travel to Earth to save his planet, leading him to meet Tom Wachowski (James Marsden), the city's sheriff, and to face the most evil villain of all, Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey). This trailer definitely has more presence; everything seems more integrated, and we no longer have to deal with the discomfort of seeing such an ugly Sonic.
While the story isn't the most original, it could be effective as Detective Pikachu was. If the film earns what it hopes, Paramount has sequels in mind. Tails, Amy, Shadow, and Knuckles are some of the characters that could appear in future installments, and it will be interesting to see how this universe comes together.
Finally, Sonic: The Movie will arrive on February 14, after being postponed from its original date. We'll see if the rejection of the first design doesn't drive away viewers, because even though this trailer is much better, that first impression will be hard to forget.
