Sony Interactive Entertainment announced on October 13, 2026, that its PlayStation 5 Digital Edition Midnight Black Japanese Only, model CFI-2200B02S, would carry a Japanese suggested retail price of ¥55,000, including tax. Sony scheduled preorders to begin October 20 and the console’s Japanese release for November 19, 2026. Sony’s announcement

The Japanese price and separate disc drive

The console is a digital edition without an optical disc drive. Sony priced the matching Midnight Black Disc Drive, model CFI-ZDD1J01, separately at ¥11,980, including tax.

Buying both at those prices comes to ¥66,980. That is the sum of the separately priced products.

What comes with the console

The box includes one DualSense controller, two horizontal feet, HDMI and USB cables, a power cord, printed materials, and the pre-installed game ASTRO’s PLAYROOM. Sony sells the vertical stand separately.

The console has an 825 GB custom SSD, with some capacity reserved for system use. Once attached, the separate disc drive can play packaged games. Sony says digital PS5 and PS4 games can be obtained from the Japanese PlayStation Store; an account, internet connection, or system update may be needed, and some PS4 games may not work.

Japanese language and account requirements

Sony says the console is intended for use in Japan and requires Japanese as the system language and Japan as the PlayStation account’s country or region. Those conditions matter alongside the digital-only configuration: the announced ¥55,000 price is for a console whose account and language settings are Japan-specific.

Sony also says newly released PlayStation games from January 2028 onward will be sold as downloads only. Disc games released before January 2028 will remain usable.
