The sixth entry in the series that revolutionized 3D fighting finally makes its debut on current-generation consoles. For this occasion, Bandai Namco has revealed new details about Soulcalibur VI, including the debut of a new character and the return of familiar faces showing off their moves.
It has been six years since the release of Soulcalibur V (2012) on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. With the arrival of the current console generation, fans were hoping Bandai Namco would treat them to some good news. That news finally came with the announcement of the highly anticipated sixth installment: Soulcalibur VI. According to Bandai Namco, the game will take place during the 16th century and revisit the events of the first Soulcalibur to uncover hidden truths. This is no coincidence, as producer Motohiro Okubo stated that this sixth entry is a celebration of the franchise's 20th anniversary.
New Character and Returning Fighters
For this occasion, Bandai Namco revealed new details about Soulcalibur 6 in the form of an incredible trailer that shows Sophitia, Nightmare, Mitsurugi, Xianghua, and Kilik in action, as well as a new character named Grøh. This fighter, also known as The Agent in Black, fights with a double-tipped sword that can split into two weapons. Not much is known about Grøh himself, but it seems he is on a mission to assassinate his targets. Notice the change Kilik undergoes, who seems consumed by his "bloodlust" at the end of the video.
Combat Systems and Release
Like previous Soulcalibur games, the fights in Soulcalibur VI take place in three-dimensional combat arenas where fighters wield their weapons; all of this is masterfully done with the Unreal Engine. This sixth installment introduces a new system called Reversal Edge, which when activated gives the fighter greater offensive and defensive potential. It also brings back the 8-Way Run movement system and the Ring-Out, to knock the opponent out of the arena.
Soulcalibur VI is being developed by Project Soul and will be available on Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. The game does not have a concrete release date, but it is expected to arrive sometime in 2018. Official site: Soulcalibur VI
