On October 8, 2026, Grain Management announced a definitive agreement for SpaceX to acquire 100% of its nationwide U.S. 800 MHz spectrum portfolio. Grain said the transaction is subject to Federal Communications Commission (FCC) approval and customary closing conditions, according to the seller’s announcement.
Fierce Wireless reported a proposed price of $8 billion and a spectrum amount of 14 MHz.
How the spectrum reached Grain
Grain said a July 2026 FCC order approving its acquisition from T-Mobile established a competitive selection process and a conditional path for direct-to-device deployment. In August 2026, Grain said it acquired the nationwide 800 MHz portfolio from T-Mobile in exchange for cash and Grain’s 600 MHz spectrum.
What the spectrum is intended to support
Grain described the spectrum as intended to support Starlink Mobile direct-to-device (D2D) service, connecting customers from the ground and from space. D2D refers to wireless connectivity designed to reach devices directly.
The mobile-network strategy remains a point of debate
Fierce Wireless reported opposing analyst views on how SpaceX might expand in mobile service. Recon Analytics founder Roger Entner expected SpaceX to build a terrestrial network. TD Cowen analyst Gregory Williams considered a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) arrangement more likely; an MVNO sells wireless service over another carrier’s network.
The two approaches have different infrastructure demands. Fierce Wireless reported that competing at national scale with a terrestrial network would require towers, distribution and back-end support, and could take several years.
