Steam Achievement Sets can preserve a completed set when a game’s developers add achievements to it. Valve announced the feature in the Steam client beta; developers decide which games use it and how achievements are grouped.

How Achievement Sets change progress

Developers can split a game’s achievements into sets, such as separate groups for single-player and multiplayer goals. Each set gets its own progress bar, and completing all its achievements adds a completion trophy to the player’s profile. Achievements still unlock through normal gameplay.

Valve says a set stays marked complete when developers later add achievements to it, until the player returns to the game. That can keep a new addition from immediately undoing a completion milestone, but it depends on the game’s developers configuring sets.

DLC and archived achievements

Valve separates achievements available to all players into Base Game sets and achievements tied to add-on content into DLC sets. Base Game progress and trophies appear in blue; DLC progress and trophies appear in purple. DLC achievements count toward overall game progress once a player has access to the relevant content.

Developers can also archive individual achievements or entire sets. If a player earned archived content, it remains visible on that player’s profile. If they missed it, the archived content is hidden from their profile and does not block completion of the set or game.

Where to see and compare progress

The updated achievements page summarizes overall and set progress, with filters for sets and locked or unlocked achievements. Players can also toggle global achievement-completion statistics. Completed sets can appear in the profile’s Completionist Showcase and Completed tab, and set information can appear in the Games List and library and store pages.

Steam’s comparison feature lets players compare achievements with up to three friends, including rare achievements, completed sets, and DLC-set progress. Totals can differ when players have access to different content or have different time-limited or archived achievements.

Valve’s announcement listed 17 games as supporting Achievement Sets, including Portal 2, DREDGE, Team Fortress 2, and Against the Storm. Because developers configure the sets, an existing game’s achievement list does not reorganize automatically.
