Nintendo Switch 2 connects to a TV or monitor through its own dock, a compatible power adapter and an Ultra High Speed (UHS) HDMI cable. If the display stays blank, Nintendo’s troubleshooting sequence starts with a 30-second power disconnect, then checks handheld operation, accessories and the direct path to the screen before moving on to other equipment or service.
What you need
Use the Nintendo Switch 2 dock, the Switch 2 AC adapter (model NGN-01) and a UHS HDMI cable. Nintendo’s TV setup instructions cover both TVs and monitors.
The original Nintendo Switch AC adapter, HAC-002, can charge Switch 2 when connected directly to the console, but it cannot power TV mode through the dock. Nintendo says a commercial alternative rated at 54 W or more may be used; it has not tested third-party adapters and cannot guarantee their stable operation or safety. The original Switch’s HDMI cable also is not UHS and cannot be used for Switch 2 TV play.
Connect Nintendo Switch 2 to a TV or monitor
- Open the dock’s rear cover to reach its connections.
- Connect the Switch 2 adapter to the dock’s power port, then plug the adapter directly into a wall outlet.
- Connect a UHS HDMI cable between the dock and an HDMI input on the TV or monitor.
- Close the dock’s rear cover.
- Remove both Joy-Con 2 controllers from the console.
- Place the console in the dock with its screen facing the same direction as the dock’s front.
- Turn on the display and select the HDMI input used by the dock.
The display should show the console’s TV output once the correct input is selected. A monitor works too, as long as it has an HDMI input for the dock’s cable.
Start blank-screen troubleshooting with a 30-second disconnect
Nintendo’s blank-screen troubleshooting steps begin by resetting the power connection and checking whether the console works outside the dock:
- Turn off the TV.
- Disconnect the cables from the dock.
- Unplug the adapter from both the wall and the dock or console, and leave it disconnected for 30 seconds.
- Connect the adapter directly to the console and plug it into the wall. Remove the console from the dock; press its POWER button if the handheld screen does not turn on.
- Check that the console has the latest system update before testing the docked connection again.
If the console also has no image in handheld mode, Nintendo directs users to troubleshoot the console’s handheld power issue.
Test the display path before requesting service
If handheld mode works, check that you are using the Switch 2 dock and adapter. Inspect the adapter, HDMI cable and dock for damage, loose connectors or worn cables. Remove a protective case before docking the console.
Next, plug the adapter directly into a wall outlet and connect HDMI straight from the dock to the TV. Temporarily remove devices between them, such as a soundbar, home-theater system or video adapter. Confirm the TV is set to the dock’s HDMI input and that the console faces the dock’s front.
If there is still no picture, Nintendo recommends adjusting or lowering the console’s TV output resolution. Then try another HDMI port, another cable or another TV. Change one part of the connection at a time so you can see which change restores the picture.
When the dock or console needs service
If Switch 2 works with a different dock, Nintendo says the original dock needs service. If the screen remains blank after the checks, Nintendo recommends sending the console and dock for service.
