Valve announced on October 23, 2026, that SteamOS 3.9.5 had reached the stable channel for all users. For Steam Deck, the update improves idle power consumption when no audio is playing, but Valve gave no percentage or extra-runtime figure. That change concerns idle use, not a measured increase in gaming battery life.
What changed in SteamOS 3.9
SteamOS 3.9 is the release name; 3.9.5 is the stable build. The update refreshes the Arch Linux base, rebases the Linux kernel on version 7.2 and updates Desktop Mode from KDE Plasma 6.4.3 to 6.7.3.
The Wi-Fi backend depends on how SteamOS is installed. New installations use wpa_supplicant by default. Existing installations continue using iwd unless the user changes the setting in Developer Settings. Valve also lists faster Wi-Fi reconnection after waking from sleep for wpa_supplicant.
Device-specific fixes in SteamOS 3.9.5
Valve lists fixes for Steam Machine Remote Play when the system starts without an external display, frame-limiter behavior with VRR, and frame limiting that affected VR titles streamed from Steam Machine to Steam Frame. The update also addresses lower-than-intended frame rates on certain external displays and improves support for the Steam Frame wireless adapter.
On Legion Go 2, SteamOS 3.9.5 fixes a system crash in Forza Horizon 6 and adds preliminary brightness-control support. Other game-specific fixes include compatibility changes for ELDEN RING and DARK SOULS III on recent Panther Lake Intel CPUs, a resume-from-suspend performance fix for STAR WARS: Galactic Racer on Steam Machine, and a fix for an issue that could lead to GPU errors in The Crew Motorfest.
Steam Deck hibernation is not enabled
Valve describes hibernation support as preliminary. It is not exposed in Game Mode and is not enabled on Steam Deck because of an outstanding driver bug.
