Recently we saw how the inside of a house can become a Lemmings level thanks to augmented reality. This time, Niusounds uses Microsoft's HoloLens glasses to play Super Mario Bros. with the plumber jumping in the real world in augmented reality.
We've already seen pure horror in augmented reality with Night Terrors, we showed you how the interior of a house can be a Lemmings level via HoloLens, and we were amazed by the incredible version of Portal being introduced into the real world in an amazing way. Now the chosen one is Super Mario Bros., whom we can see jumping in the real world in augmented reality through Microsoft's HoloLens glasses. This experimental project is led by Niusounds, who have been posting videos of the Italian plumber jumping in our world on their Twitter account.
By scanning the environment in 3D in real time, Mario traverses a bedroom, jumping over tables and surfaces, occasionally falling to the ground. He doesn't just walk side to side, but is also fully capable of coming and going throughout the entire room. Although not without errors, it seems surprisingly accurate, and below you can see it in motion:
Unfortunately, it is very unlikely that we will ever get to play with this development by Niusounds in the company of beloved Mario. Nintendo maintains a counterproductive stance on virtual reality content, and even more so on augmented reality, and we doubt that the company will ever release anything for Microsoft. Meanwhile, the HoloLens glasses themselves are only available as a developer edition, so it will be some time until this technology and similar experiences are available to consumers.
