Monitors are getting bigger, wider, and offering higher resolution. These technical details multiply the comfort factor when working with multiple windows, but traditional web browsers don't do a very efficient job when presenting content. The Sushi Browser project aims to fix that with a Chromium-based browser that implements a multipanel format for tabs, opening several sites at once without issues.
Why Traditional Browsers Fall Short
My most important complaints about modern browsers and their current state focus on performance. They are unstable, have irrelevant features, put too much load on processors, and devour RAM like crazy. However, there are also aspects to optimize in terms of basic functions. I have seen browsers waste a lot of space on large monitors, perhaps more than we should accept. Maybe what is needed is a reinterpretation of the interface, leaving aside the linear profile of tabs to deliver a more efficient environment. That brings us to the threshold of the new Sushi Browser.
A Multipanel Approach
Sushi Browser presents itself as the first multipanel browser that allows us to divide the main window into several sections, and load a different page in each one. The most common action is to use three panels (two on each side and one at the bottom), but we can make the division in a 3+1 configuration, or even more tabs. If you want to extract a panel to turn it into an independent window, just drag it. Among its secondary functions, we find a file manager, access to PowerShell, and a scrolling synchronizer.
Current State and Stability
Sushi Browser is at version 0.4.0, has builds compatible with Windows, Linux, and MacOS, and if you don't want a permanent copy you can always use the portable version. That said, the browser is under development, and sharp edges are the order of the day. Personally, I had stability issues with the portable build, starting with errors at launch and spontaneous closures when performing certain combinations. Even so, its potential is enormous, and we hope to see much more.
