At the Oct. 15 opening of Micron Technology’s advanced assembly-and-test plant in Taichung, Taiwan President Lai Ching-te is calling on the company and its workers to negotiate in good faith. The appeal comes amid a union’s authorization for possible strike action over Micron’s bonus system, Reuters reported in a story republished by Yahoo Finance.

What the Taoyuan vote authorized

A Reuters story reposted in r/MU_Stock reported that 1,994 members of the Taoyuan union voted to authorize strike action, representing 99% of ballots cast. The vote backed possible action; it was not a count of workers who walked out.

Taoyuan and Taichung talks stood at different stages

Mediation with the Taoyuan union ended without agreement in September, while the Taichung union remained in negotiations, Reuters reported in a story republished by MarketScreener. The unions also encouraged workers to attend a Taipei demonstration scheduled for Oct. 19, which they distinguished from a strike.

Micron said it values its employees and is committed to listening to their views and engaging constructively, according to the same Reuters report.
