Tesla has turned the European Semi from a long-running promise into a defined vehicle program. The company presented the truck at IAA Transportation 2026 in Hannover on September 15, after announcing a Standard Range version with up to 550 km of range at a fully loaded 40-tonne combination. Tesla plans first European customer deliveries for 2027, but the truck is not yet in commercial service in Europe.
Tesla presents the European Semi in Hannover
Tesla’s European program became concrete with two milestones in September. Tesla Europe announced the headline specifications on September 11, and Tesla presented the vehicle at IAA Transportation in Hannover four days later.
The announcement describes a heavy battery-electric tractor designed for long-haul freight. Its advertised range is tied to a 40-tonne gross combination weight, meaning the truck and trailer are considered together under the stated operating condition.
The European launch is centered on the Standard Range model. Tesla has not confirmed that the Long Range version will launch in Europe.
What Tesla has announced about the European Semi
Tesla lists the following figures for the European vehicle:
- Range: up to 550 km at a fully loaded 40-tonne combination.
- Energy consumption: approximately 1 kWh/km under Tesla’s stated conditions.
- Charging power: up to 800 kW through the Megacharger system.

The range and consumption figures depend on operating details such as tires, the roof fairing and trailer configuration. The 550-km figure is Tesla’s estimate rather than an independently measured European road-test result.
Charging, consumption and weight in context
An 800-kW charging system is the headline technical promise. Tesla says the Megacharger can restore approximately 60% of the truck’s range in 30 minutes, a figure aimed at fitting charging into freight operations rather than treating it as a lengthy stop between shifts.
The truck’s stated consumption is approximately 1 kWh/km. At the announced 550-km range, that figure describes the vehicle’s energy-use target under Tesla’s specified conditions; it is not a universal consumption guarantee for every route, trailer or load.
The 9,100-kg curb weight applies to the truck without trailer or cargo. Tesla separately ties the range claim to a fully loaded 40-tonne combination, so the two figures describe different aspects of the vehicle: one the tractor by itself, the other the operating mass of the truck-and-trailer combination.
The European design also includes a central driving position and digital camera-based mirrors, features shown in technical comparisons of the vehicle. The camera-mirror configuration is presented as part of the European specification, while the operational effect of the central seat in European freight depots remains a question for real-world fleets.
A 2027 delivery plan, not a European rollout yet
Tesla plans to begin European customer deliveries in 2027. The company has not published an exact delivery date, country sequence or European price.
That leaves the announcement at the stage of a defined product and a stated delivery plan, rather than a truck that European fleets can already order and operate. Tesla has delivered early Semi units in the United States, but those vehicles do not establish commercial availability for the European version.
The real test will be European freight operations
Tesla is entering a European heavy-truck market where Mercedes-Benz, Volvo Trucks, MAN, Scania, DAF and Renault Trucks already offer battery-electric vehicles and established service networks. That gives fleet operators an alternative to judge on more than range and charging power: service coverage, spare parts, uptime, payload planning and depot routines all matter when a truck is a working asset rather than a technology demonstration.
The European Semi’s announced figures are ambitious, particularly the combination of 550 km of range and 800 kW charging. Its commercial impact will depend on how the vehicle’s stated performance fits those established freight systems when deliveries begin in 2027.
