Classic games never die. The trend keeps renewing itself, and that’s how we come across little gems like The Curse of Tristram: Destruction’s End, a Diablo II mod built with the StarCraft II engine. And the best part? It’s free to play!

Four Years in the Making

Diablo II remains one of Blizzard Entertainment’s most popular games to this day. So much so that 16 years after its release, the company released a patch to make it run on modern versions of Windows and OS X. And while fans wait for a remake or remaster of this cult classic, a modder named Etienne Godbout has spent the last four years working on "The Curse of Tristram: Destruction’s End", a free Diablo II mod built with the StarCraft II engine.

Over the past weekend, Godbout released a playable version of The Curse of Tristram to the public on a test server. The game is still in beta, but the first six levels of Diablo II are available and quite impressive. The mod includes all seven character classes and three difficulty modes. Two of these modes are new: the first is Heroic, which adds stronger enemies and equipment, but also a sort of "curse" that randomly disables certain abilities during gameplay; the second is Mythic, which increases the power of all bosses and adds events.

Still in Beta

As mentioned above, The Curse of Tristram is still in beta, meaning there are many bugs and details yet to be fixed. And considering only one person is working on it in his free time, it wouldn’t hurt to give Godbout a hand by supporting him on his Patreon account.

How to Play

Developed by Etienne Godbout, you can access this mod for free by running StarCraft II (remember, it’s free!), heading to the custom modes at the top of the game, and then searching for "The Curse of Tristram" under the Arcade maps. From there, you can create a lobby where others can join if you want to play cooperatively.
