The Olympic Games hold a privileged place among the largest events organized by humanity, but that privilege translates into a gigantic expenditure of money, economic benefits that never fully materialize, and a chilling number of lavish facilities that end up abandoned. Photographers around the world have not hesitated to capture with their cameras those corpses of iron and concrete, covered in dust, trash, stagnant water, and neglect. Today we share a humble selection of their images.
We are supposed to have learned to do things better. The last summer games (Rio 2016) demonstrated the potential of temporary facilities, and Tokyo 2020 is expected to adopt a similar model to host each sport and its athletes. This brings the promise of more economical and efficient Olympic Games in the future, but the old structures of Berlin, Sarajevo, Atlanta, Athens, and Beijing (to cite a few examples) have not gone anywhere. In fact, you will find them relatively easily if you decide to visit them. As an alternative, you can enjoy these excellent photographs, while also remembering that any country should think twice or three times before becoming an Olympic host…
