The world never stops surprising us, and when it comes to The Simpsons, it always grabs our attention. This time, it's about the unveiling of an honorary statue of Humberto Velez, who was the voice of Homer Simpson for Latin America for 15 years.
We would have liked the news to be about the tribute to Humberto Velez, but that wasn't exactly what caught the attention of residents of Orizaba, in the state of Veracruz, Mexico. The statue is life-size, and that might be the only thing it has in common with Matt Groening's animated character. The inauguration took place last March 3rd.
The one who handed over the statue was Orizaba's mayor, Igor Rojí Lopez, who said his goal was to create a Homer figure, "generate controversy" and "create a promotion of the city at a national level" — and they certainly did. The Homer Simpson that residents can now see was placed at the Poliforum Mier y Pesado castle, a historic heritage site in the Latin American country.
Reactions on social networks were quick to arrive, with more mockery and indignation than pride over the event that Orizaba's residents came across a week earlier. It is also rumored that the statue cost Orizaba around 82,000 dollars.
