For many (including this writer), The Simpsons are not what they used to be. Still, there's no denying the series does a great job keeping pace with the times, staying up to date both culturally and technologically. If you don't believe it, just remember the Google Glass parody or when Marge became addicted to a game very similar to the classic World of Warcraft. And to celebrate the 600th episode, and also the 27th Halloween special known as Treehouse of Horror, the creators of the series and Google have joined forces to create an app to watch The Simpsons in virtual reality.
The VR Experience
For the opening of Treehouse of Horror XXVII, which aired last Sunday, viewers were able to enjoy a parody of Planet of the Apes titled "Planet of the Couches". This opening now has virtual reality support with a longer 2-minute content instead of the usual 45 seconds. Thanks to spherical 360° video, you can look wherever you want, follow a specific character, and rewatch the story as many times as you like.
There are six scenes to discover with several references and jokes that many will quickly notice. See if you can find them. Produced with Google Spotlight Stories, the app for The Simpsons "Planet of the Couches" is available for free on iOS and Android. You can view it with any Google Cardboard viewer for a better virtual reality experience.
