The new Netflix series The Witcher will be based on Andrzej Sapkowski's fantasy saga, previously adapted to film and television with little success but gaining worldwide recognition through the video game series of the same name.
The epic saga follows Geralt of Rivia, a monster hunter living on the fringes of society, who joins a sorceress and a princess to face dangerous battles.
The series will consist of eight episodes, the first four directed by Alik Sakharov (Game of Thrones) and the remaining four by Charlotte Brändström (Outlander) and Alex Garcia Lopez (Luke Cage). The showrunner for The Witcher will be Laun Schmidt Hissrich, a writer from Daredevil.
The cast of the new Netflix series is led by Nordic and British actors: Freya Allan (Ciri), Anya Chalotra (Yennefer), Eamon Farren (Cahir), Jodhy May (Calanthe), Maciej Musial (Sir Lazlo), Adam Levy (Mousesack), Joey Batey (Jaskier), Lars Mikkelsen (Stregobor), Wilson Radjou-Pujalte (Dara), Anna Shaffer (Triss), and Royce Pierreson (Istredd).
Below we will see the video uploaded to Instagram by Henry Cavill himself, where he appears as Geralt, although his appearance has already generated controversy on social media due to its lack of similarity to the video game Geralt and the artificial look of his hair. This will surely provide material for memes, as he is compared to Raiden from Mortal Kombat or a cousin of Legolas from Lord of the Rings.
Apart from this, a trend is emerging where short images and videos from the set are shared on social media, as seen with Joaquin Phoenix for The Joker. It seems more a strategy to gauge public opinion before risking an absolute failure.
There is still no release date for The Witcher, but it is officially expected to arrive in 2019 on Netflix. The rest will be waiting for more previews and, of course, more memes.
