After the famous "I'm going to put my head in a microwave with cement" and the YouTube challenges that give a new dimension to human stupidity, comes "placing your face next to a jet engine"... or maybe not. In reality, what they do on The Hacksmith channel is explore the possibility of flying like Iron Man, and for that they ended up acquiring a jet engine. As a safety test, they decided to put a latex head at the back...
The Iron Man Dream
The obsession of YouTube and some private projects with Iron Man is well documented. The idea of flying "Tony Stark style" is too tempting, and that has led to the creation of alternatives like the Daedalus suit that we saw in April last year. Beyond the inevitable technical limitations, the fundamental problem behind these initiatives is that there are too many ways to end up dead. The plan of The Hacksmith channel to avoid that fate is to design a hybrid solution that combines high-power electric ducted fans and jet engines.
The Safety Test
As it could not be otherwise, if someone gets access to a jet engine that raises its temperature to hundreds of degrees Celsius (minimum) and devours liters of fuel in a matter of seconds, the first thing you must do is burn things, and in The Hacksmith they used as sacrifice a very mistreated latex head, which had already been victim of several crossbow shots. In less than three seconds, the face was reduced to its fake bone, and the simple fact of imagining the smell of burnt latex closes my nose and throat.
Then they used another head of extruded polystyrene, which disappeared even faster.
To finish their "safety test", they tried to cook a sausage. The engine fulfilled that objective, but it also made the sausage fly out in several pieces. The next step of The Hacksmith will probably be to acquire two or three more of those engines.
