The second half of the year has been a nightmare for the BitTorrent world. KickAssTorrents shut down, unstable clones, trackers that disappear for fear of reprisals, and dozens of rumors make searching for content a bit more complicated. However, while authorities celebrate victory by taking down one or two portals that act as a “phone book,” others emerge more powerful, like Torrentz2, which combines 55 million torrents distributed across 61 domains.
The Fall of the Big Indexes
The blow was felt. It was a direct right hook to the chin of BitTorrent users: KickAssTorrents was seized by American authorities, and it looks like it won't return. Many have tried to fill the void. Others thought it was the perfect opportunity to inject malware or turn the portal into a premium service. But the BitTorrent user can easily see through those deceptions. Social networks, forums, and portals like Reddit don't take long to separate the fake from the real, and the search for content continues. A very popular replacement for KickAssTorrents was the domain torrentz.eu, but in the first days of August it vanished. A brief farewell message (“Torrentz will always love you”), and that was all. Two of the biggest BitTorrent indexes on the Web, down within three weeks. Again, several clones rushed to take its place, and the one that got the best reputation in recent days is Torrentz2.
Torrentz2: A Clone with More Indexes
Torrentz2 doesn't try to pass itself off as an “heir” or anything like that, but rather admits from the start that it is a clone of Torrentz, with the addition of multiple indexes to its database. Its list includes practically all the big giants, including The Pirate Bay, ExtraTorrent, 1337X, BTArena, BitSnoop, and many others. The portal announces more than 55 million indexed torrents, a respectable number no doubt, but we need to highlight that Torrentz2 seems to respond to DMCA requests, and that at the end of the day it is an “index of indexes,” so we won't find any direct magnets here, but rather we'll be redirected to the portal that contains it.
I was doing some search tests with Torrentz2, and I must admit that the results were not as consistent as I expected. On more than one occasion I found that it was better to go directly to The Pirate Bay and get the magnets there, although it all depends on the type of content.
