The official Wikipedia article describes millennials as those born between 1981 and 1996. The first generation to "grow up with the internet", or the first "Global Generation", if you will. "Digital natives" is another phrase that has been used a lot (maybe too much) with millennials, but Mike Lacher and Brian Moore from McSweeney's believe that millennials are already old enough to use it as a filter... and their solution is the "Captcha para Millennials".
In recent months I've seen several articles describing the new generation of young users as "digital illiterates" who didn't develop enough skills to sit in front of a computer and work with it, open a file manually, or print its contents. The exchange of arguments has been quite extensive, but we can follow the classic apocalyptic route of some not-so-specialized media... or we can take it with a bit of humor.
How so? Well... from a certain point of view, it's easy to assume that Gen Z and Gen Alpha don't know how to use a classic iPod, or have no idea who Michael Cera is. And both Mike Lacher and Brian Moore from McSweeney's decided to use those details in a very particular way: creating a "Captcha para Millennials".
"Captcha para Millennials": We're older than we think
The idea is that web-savvy millennials can now use this custom-made captcha to limit their content to more "adult" generations. The first step involves the aforementioned Michael Cera (Juno? Scott Pilgrim? Come on!), while the second forces us to Google "what is skibidi toilet". Then we find things like identifying emojis and posting a "boomerang", but the most technically impressive (and one that affects me the most, I must admit) is the virtual classic iPod. Not only do you have to master its controls, but the artist list is "pure millennial".
In short, we can make fun of the younger ones and their inability to print a Word document, but the "Captcha para Millennials" reminds us that we're also funny. We're old, and the temptation to "shout at the cloud" is growing.
